I’ve been reading up on the chemical reaction chocolate has when it hits your stomach. It seems it gives us many of the good hormones we release when we have sex or cuddle. No wonder so many women crave it! So if you are having a time on your own after a breakup, eating dark chocolate (in moderation) may help you get through:
- The fats in chocolate make the stomach signal the brain to release oxytocin – the ‘bonding hormone’ which leaves you feeling connected and relaxed.
- When you eat chocolate, endorphins (which are a bit like natural morphine) are released into your bloodstream which are make you feel good and block pain.
- One of chocolate’s key ingredients is phenylethylamine (PEA) the “love-chemical” which is a natural form of amphetamine (that also peaks with orgasm). PEA’s affect from eating chocolate is still being disputed – as many experts think it doesn’t affect us when we eat chocolate. Perhaps some of us are sensitive to its effects in very small quantities.
There are many reasons to keep up your chocolate eating when newly single – it keeps you releasing those ‘happy hormones’, it is sensuous, it is delicious and it brings us joy. You might like to try my best ever chocolate brownie recipe – they are very good.
I particularly love 70% cacao chocolate – bitter but rich! I am hanging out to try Chocolove’s Belgian Chocolate – yum!
What is your favorite chocolate?
