Breakup Diary: Tokyo Life

by Sarah Creagh Horth on September 12, 2009

T and I were still together when I wrote this, but things are quickly going downhill.  Under 3 months until we breakup...

This is a bit of a sidetracked entry, about what my life was like in Tokyo, as I went through the hell of my breakup. I was in a very foreign place, away from my family – which didn’t make things any easier.

mother on bicycle 4/8  List of things that are wonderful about Tokyo life:

  • Everyone rides a bicycle – fathers, mothers with one child on the front and one child on the back
  • You get a good salary
  • The food is delicious absolutely everywhere you go
  • The cigarettes are cheap – if you’re a smoker (not me)
  • People practice their musical instruments outside by the river, making my ride home in the evening enchanting
  • Going to an all-night beach party and seeing the magnificence of Mt Fuji as the sun rises

Sad or strange things about Tokyo life:

  • People who walk their bicycles
  • Everyone seems to work hard but not much gets done
  • The homeless
  • There’s no space
  • Being at an all-night beach party and watching the little old people come out to do their ’standard’ Japanese stretches in the morning, while we are still partying
  • You start to bow when you are on the phone
